📰 News Screener

In today's China, sensational news of all kinds pervades all aspects of our lives.

This project is inspired by the intrusive and grievous issues reported by 'people' in the context of the China Eastern Airlines incident, and thus asks the question “Is everyone a journalist?” Inspired by the visual experimentation of using a hammer to remove 'useless' words and phrases from the text, I created a fictional machine that could constantly crawl through the news, and I disguised myself as a filter to produce and record the act of knocking down the machine, with the intention of reflecting on and paying attention to the current news chaos, resulting in two parts: the video and the paper media.

PERFORMANCE & VIDEO

In the video, I take on the role of screen worker in front of a machine that constantly gets all kinds of news, constantly filtering and trying to weed out the useless sensationalism of the modern information world.

ZINE
This zine uses data visualisation to compare Chinese journalistic chaos with yellow journalism, linking ‘sensational words’ to ‘likes’ and counting different news catalogues, content and the words that recur in them.
