🏡 Trees or Poles...?

Why do the utility poles on the streets of Britain seem to radiate like a net into the sky?

I questioned, having just arrived in London. After observing and recording a whole street full of poles along the way, I discovered their subtle relationship with trees in a conversation with a resident.

Trees or Poles...? explores the relationship between humans and nature in the city. Through a series of observations, recordings, interviews, and collections, using the relationship between telegraph poles and trees in the streets around us as the source and purpose, I explored and reflected on how man-made objects and nature coexist harmoniously with a non-anthropocentric perspective. I created a series of posters using rubbing and anthropomorphic dialogues. At the same time, I planted a "tree" at the open studio site to blur the visual boundaries between the tree and the telegraph poles. Finally, I brought the outcome back to the scene of life to create a poetic and humorous atmosphere.

I realised: they are already coexisting in our environment, just like the relationship between human and nature.

Trees or Poles...?

Poles...? : Interview Video

I conducted a street interview and recorded a video clip of the clip. The neglect and indifference of the passers-by made me start to reflect and put forward the idea of trees and poles co-existing in harmony. At the end of the video, I wrote a poem about my thoughts, which combines wit and humour with a serious and beautiful atmosphere, and serves as an introduction to the next stage of creation.

Rubbing Poster

Installation exhibition site

As in the installation and posters displayed at open studio, I tried to blur the boundaries between the tree and the telegraph pole by using rubbing. I "planted a tree" indoors, using branches and wires to connect the whole space, echoing the tree outside the window, which intuitively brings surprise and thought to the viewer. Just like man and nature, they are omnipresent in our lives, but coexist harmoniously without us noticing.
